A Teacher Librarian has four major roles.
As a teacher:

- Teaches:
- How to access information from a variety of sources
- How to evaluate information
- How to use information effectively
- Citing sources
- Note taking
- Online searching skills
- Organization of print materials in the library
- Organization of electronic resources
- Technology instruction
- Reading Guidance
- Book talks - talk to me about the new Iowa Children's Choice Award books.
- Promotes quality literature
- Contact me to read aloud to your students!
- Literature circles
As an instructional partner, joins with teachers to:
- Plan authentic learning tasks
- Design curriculum to meet students' needs
- Team teaches information and technology skills
- Assess students' finished products
As an information specialist:
- Identifies, selects, orders, processes, and organizes resources in all formats that support the curriculum.
- Locates appropriate sources for a wide variety of information needs.
As a program adminstrator:
- Takes an inventory of library resources annually
- Withdraws worn out resources and equipment annually
- Manages the library budget
- Trains associates, volunteers, and students helpers
- Establishes policies and procedures for use of resources
- Promotes the library media program
- Reports data
- Creates and maintains a web site
